What is heavy haul trucking?
When a a loaded item exceeds specific dimension or weight it is considered a heavy load and requires specialized trucking during transport. In most cases, a load is considered oversize or overweight if it exceeds 8'6" wide, 13'6" high or 80,000 pounds.
Are permits required in heavy haul?
When a load is considered oversize, special permits are required. Heavy haul requires a state oversize load permit for all the states you will haul your load through. You may also need city or county permits. If a load is considered a superload and exceeds standard oversize/overweight dimensions, over 16' high or wide, over 135' long or over 180,000 pounds then special permits, route surveys and more may be required.
Are pilot cars required in heavy haul?
When a load exceeds a specific width, length, height or overhang, a pilot car is required.
For example, in New Jersey, a load greater than 14' wide or 100' long requires a pilot. If a load is greater than 16' wide, 2 pilots are required. Pilot car and escort requirements vary by state.
Are there restrictions in heavy haul transport?
When it comes to heavy haul, there can be many restrictions depending on the state your load will travel through. There can be restrictions on night and/or weekend travel, construction restrictions and even holiday restrictions.
